Opening concert – Skalkottas and his contemporaries I

Taking Skalkottas' apprenticeship under Schoenberg as its starting point, this year's thematic cycle "Skalkottas and his contemporaries" sheds light on the Greek composer's invaluable oeuvre in tandem with compositions by his contemporaries. In this spirit, our Orchestra's Artistic Director, Stefanos Tsialis, has coupled Skalkottas' Classical Symphony with Webern's expressionistically dramatic Passacaglia for this first outing of the series. This season's opening concert is rendered more glorious still by the participation of the legendary David Geringas in a performance of the quintessential Romantic cello concerto.

Symphonic Rock

So how unbridgeable is that chasm separating symphonic from rock music? The success of last year's Classic Rock I concerts proved how keen audiences were to break down the barriers between musical genres, and led to this season's Classic Rock II! So on the stage of the Herodes Atticus theatre, we will once again be lending a symphonic dimension to rock music that has gone down in history, bringing together both different generations and different "tribes" of music lovers. The Athens State Orchestra joins forces with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Friedemann Riehle, who also composed and orchestrated the programme, and welcomes John Lees' Barclay James Harverst for two special evenings in the shadow of the Acropolis.

Music and songs by Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Queen, U2, Europe, Alannah Myles and John Lees’ Barclay James Harvest

A Tribute to Steven Spielberg - Greek Festival 2019

Steven Spielberg’s name has been linked to some of our most enjoyable experiences in a movie theatre: who hasn’t had goosebumps while watching Jaws or Schindler’s List? Who hasn’t experienced an adrenaline rush while watching the Indiana Jones movies, Jurassic Park, Gremlins or, more recently, First Man? His movies either as director or producer have also been noted for their memorable movie scores, composed by some of the world’s greatest film composers, including Jerry Goldsmith, Alan Silvestri and above all the great John Williams. The Athens State Orchestra, conducted by the dynamic Indonesian maestro Adrian Prabava, will guide us through the magical world of Spielberg’s films -both his own films and his reminding us some of the most beloved film scores of all time.

Music from Steven Spielberg's movies.

Maxim Vengerov with the Athens State Orchestra

Maxim Vengerov is one of the greatest violinists of the last few decades and a highly cultured and sensitive artist, whose every performance is a must-see event. In this, his first collaboration with the Athens State Orchestra, Vengerov will perform one of the greatest and most demanding concertos for violin ever, Concerto for violin and orchestra in D major, op. 77 by the great German Romantic composer Johannes Brahms. The distinguished soloist has already left his mark on this concerto, highlighting this majestic piece in various performances across the globe. The performance will also include the famous Symphony “From the New World” by the major Czech composer Antonín Dvořák, conceived during his stay in New York City (1892-93). The Symphony has become one of the most popular compositions of all time, with its masterful structure, its fully realized orchestration and its diverse musical influences encompassing Native American music and the Spiritual music of the African Americans. The Orchestra will be conducted by its Artistic Director, Stefanos Tsialis.

Meet the Orchestra! 19-04-2019

Joyful and melancholic melodies, fast and slow pace, strong and soft sounds, small and big instruments, familiar and exotic rythms, words and notes, humor but also seriousness: this is the magic formula of the creation of Benjamin Britten’s ‘The young person’s guide to the Orchestra’ and Gregory Smith’s ‘Mr. Smith’s composition’, two pieces for the initiation of children and young audience in the world of music. Between them, a journey in the mystic sounds of the Organ, but also to its interior, through a movie projection.

As guides in the immense map of the symphonic music, the members of the Athens State Orchestra under Miltos Logiadis’s baton, Artistic Director of the Megaron, and the distinguished baritone Tasis Christogiannis in the role of the narrator. Urania Gasiou, organist of the Megaron, will interpret Johann Sebastian Bach’s ‘Toccata and Fuga’, while the texts of the event are signed by Sofia Topouzi, head of Educational Programmes of the Megaron – the Athens Concert Hall.
