DISNEY FANTASIA - I

The finest animated film of all time, Disney's legendary Fantasia, meets the Athens State Orchestra at the Christmas Theatre in a magnificent celebration of images, colour and, of course, music. Fantasia is a unique partnering of animation and classical music, and the musicians of the Athens State Orchestra will be accompanying the screening with live performances of the much-loved symphonic pieces that stimulated Disney to such flights of cinematic fancy. The Athens State Orchestra is conducted by one of its principals, Nikos Haliassas.

Projection of the movie with live music and Greek subtitles.

Life is beautiful - La vita e bella

Nicola Piovani's sensitive, optimistic world unfolds before us through his compositions and his songs, ideally performed here with Lina Nikolakopoulou's Greek lyrics by Thodoris Voutsikakis. The leading Italian composer was encouraged to start writing music by Manos Hadjidakis and has now written the scores for over 130 films. He has collaborated with directors including Taviani, Tornatore, Benigni (Oscar for Original Dramatic Score, 1999, for Life is beautiful), and Fellini (on his last three films).

Musical promenades at the Museums XIV - Chamber music concert from the Young Musicians' Academy of the Athens State Orchestra

The training our young colleagues receive at the Athens State Orchestra Young Musicians' Academy could hardly fail to include chamber music, that indispensable school that teaches musicians to listen to, understand and respond to one another. We are certain that our students in the strings and brass classes will give of their best and move everyone who places themselves in their hands for the duration of the concert!

The programme will be announced shortly.

Musical promenades at the Museums XIII - From baroque to rock (part 2)

We have to admit that the Athens State Orchestra's horn section has been known to “steal the show” in our symphonic concerts! So they have every right to look forward to demonstrating their technical and expressive abilities in all their glory in a programme for French horn ensemble that will allow us to enjoy the lofty masculine sounds of their instruments even more.

Works for horn ensemble from the 17th to the 21st century.

Breakthroughs and Pioneers V – Beethoven: 250 years

Having recently demonstrated his profound understanding of the particularities of the German repertoire, the German conductor Marcus Bosch will be joining forces with the Athens State Orchestra once again as, together, they seek to achieve something special: a fresh and dynamic reading of works with which every music lover is more than familiar. And we are confident of his success, just as we are certain of the brilliance the distinguished pianist Stefanos Thomopoulos will bring to bear on two explosive works by Franz Liszt.

Beethoven: 250 years 15-05-2020

What are the audience of a classical symphonic concert there for? What do we want? Symphonic grandeur and the intellectual rigour of the repertoire's great works? Breathtaking virtuoso acrobatics? But something new, too, uncharted sonic territory? Whichever of the above you seek, this concert, and its two internationally celebrated protagonists, the Indonesian conductor Adrian Prabava and the pianist Theodosia Dokou, will give it to you in spades.

Musical promenades at the Museums XII - Dancing…

“There were five of us, friends, and we said we'd go travelling. That we'd take our music and lay it out over time. Near and far. That we'd take you with us. Cavafy says ‘when you dance, you write upon the earth what your soul wants to say’. Looked at another way, music speaks to your soul and raises your spirits, fires your emotions. And we married the music to the dance and invite you to join us on our multidimensional journey...”

Prior to the concert, a free guided tour will be offered for a limited number of auditors.

Mahler Cycle X

Twenty-seven years have passed since the Athens State Orchestra performed the historic Greek première of the Symphony of a Thousand at the Megaron Athens Concert Hall. Now, Greece's two premier musical institutions are to join forces once again in a true musical ‘extravaganza’ to mark the completion of our Mahler Cycle. And it has to be said that Mahler's Eight Symphony contains elements that are a good deal more impressive than the host of musicians on stage. Most impressive of all is the music’s blazing hymn to Eros, which it approaches as a driving force of life, as Man's only "salvation", as the essence of our communication with God.
