Concert for the anniversary of 200 years since the Greek Revolution

We honour the anniversary of the National Day on 28 October, presenting the programme we had prepared for the concert on 25 March for the great anniversary of 200 years after the beginning of the Revolution for Freedom. A concert that, unfortunately, has been postponed due to a Covid-19 affection. The programme starts with the Dance of `21, an order of the Athens State Orchestra to the internationally acknowledged Greek composer and conductor Konstantia Gourzi. Ector Berlioz’s Heroic Scene follows, depicting Europe’s admiration towards the heroic struggle of Greek people. The concert peaks with the highly symbolic Symphony No. 1 in C major, known as Symphony of Valiance, composed by the father of the National Music School, Manolis Kalomoiris. The strong and heroic symphony, heritage of the composer to the Athens State Orchestra, as he noted, expresses the need to «depict with music the emotion I felt witnessing all expressions of the Greek Valiance : facing joy, dance, love, war, death». Tasos Apostolou and Petros Magoulas participate as soloists while Stefanos Tsialis is the conductor of the programme.

Christmas concert

At festive times of the year, we often seek to reconnect with those values great and small which we can lose sight of amidst the daily routine. For Christmas this year, the Athens State Orchestra will stage the concert it couldn’t perform last year due to the pandemic, playing the ‘Parthenon’ of the symphonic repertoire, Beethoven's revered Ninth Symphony, singing the ever-relevant “Ode to Joy” for its audience under the baton of the internationally renowned Estonian maestro, Mihkel Kütson.

19:30, free introductory speech by Titos Gouvelis for ticket holders

Big projects for small ensembles

The String Quintet, written just two months before Schubert's death, is not simply the pinnacle of the Austrian composer's chamber music, it is one of the greatest musical works of all time. Listening to it is to be taken on a long and adventurous journey you will never forget.

Peace and War

The programme of this concert by the tetART-on Quartet conceptually contrasts the love of life and joie de vivre expressed in Borodin's lyric work with the tragedy and horror of war portrayed by Shostakovich in his pitch black third quartet.

At 19:30, one hour prior to the concert, a free guided tour will be offered to auditors by Konstantinos Papachristou, Curator of the Museum.

A sally into the Baroque

Interest in the Baroque continues to grow, and with good reason, given the treasures that are there to discover in its repertoire. And each of the works in this programme performed by outstanding members of our orchestra who have a profound knowledge of the singular features of this period, is a masterpiece.

Subito

The two artists explore the phenomenon of artistic creation and set out to capture its every aspect: from non-existence and silence through to conception, inspiration and conflict and ultimately fertilization and creation.

At 19:30, one hour prior to the concert, a free guided tour will be offered to auditors by Mina Moraitou, Curator of the Museum.

Sonatas for cello and piano

This concert marks another milestone in the long and fruitful collaboration between Angelos Liakakis and Titos Kouvelis. The three sonatas they perform approach the combination of cello and piano in different ways and with different aesthetic goals, the common denominator being the authenticity of an irresistible inspiration.

Trio Opus I

The dynamic Opus I Trio, with our concertmaster on violin, performs a programme which contrasts two aspects of Romanticism: while David's trio represents a graceful and light musicality, Arensky's composition is packed with exuberantly torrid gestures. Dimitri Sykias’ 7/3 for Christmas brings the concert to a suitably festive close!
