Violin and piano. Two instruments that have proved to be perfect companions and gifted us countless exhilarating musical exchanges. The Principal A’ of the First Violins and deputy Concertmaster of the Athens State Orchestra, Nikos Mandilas, joins forces with the distinguished pianist Popi Malapani in an evening awash with Greek names. The concert opens with Dimitri Mitropoulos’ masterly transcription of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Third Partita for solo violin. This is followed by Yannis Constantinidis’ Dodecanese Suite, which makes respectful and sensitive use of traditional Greek music.

A different Nutcracker, broadcast concert

On Christmas day, the Athens State Orchestra brings to life his own, Different Nutcracker, and the famous suite from Tchaikovsky’s ballet. The innovative animation that was for the first time presented in 2017, has been recently awarded with the first prize at Athens AnimFest.

The Athens State Orchestra returns with particular pleasure this summer too at the idyllic place of Zografou Villa, offering to the audience a musical soiree dedicated to the charming Opera. Two rising stars of the Greek scene, soprano Vassia Alati and conductor Katia Molfesi, interpret famous and beloved arias and orchestral excerpts of German and French operas and operettas, while the programme comes to an end with Bedrich Smetana’s symphonic masterpiece “Vltava” (The Moldau).

If any pianist today can be considered a worthy descendant of the stars of piano’s golden age, that pianist is undoubtedly Daniil Trifonov. His spectacular virtuosity, coupled with his deeply expressive interpretations, guarantees a stirring rendition of Rachmaninov’s evergreen Second Concerto. With the celebrated maestro Lukas Karytinos providing firm direction from the podium, the Athens State Orchestra will also perform Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony, which is often called “Shostakovich’s classical symphony” in recognition of its density, translucence and freshness. The concert will end with Giorgos Koumendakis’ atmospheric The pedal tone for a child, a work inspired by the priceless musical heritage of Byzantium.

Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons underscore spring’s optimistic message that life will always win out. And it certainly isn’t by chance that the work is one of the most popular in European serious music. It is a piece that moves with its power and joie de vivre, with its images from life turned into sounds and sounds which become images of life. In a work that was ground-breaking for the late baroque era in which it was written, with the violin and the strings in the starring roles. Solo violins: Giorgos Mandilas and Nikos Mandilas.
