Packing our musical luggage, let’s go to… Portugal

The Athens State Orchestra is packing its luggage to Portugal, for the first time in its history, and presents to its Athenian audience the programme of one of the concerts that will be given within this tour.
Conducted by the eminent German conductor, violinist and tutor Christophe Poppen, the orchestra will interpret Antonin Dvorak’s pieces. The rising violinist Veronica Eberle will participate as soloist.

Martha Argerich and Theodosia Ntokou

Conducted by Stefanos Tsialis, the Athens State Orchestra will present a spellbinding performance at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. Martha Argerich, a living legend of the piano will be joined by her student and rising piano star Theodosia Ntokou to perform Francis Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos. Teacher and student will also join forces to perform Camille Saint-Saëns’ popular piece The Carnival of the Animals (Le carnaval des animaux). Argerich’s daughter, the French actress Annie Dutoit, will act out the narrative interludes (with Greek surtitles).
The performance will also include Cesar Franck’s Symphony in D Minor and excerpts of Manos Hadjidakis’ The Cursed Serpent, performed by Argerich together with special guest Dora Bakopoulou.

Three very famous symphonic pieces which could be the movements of a symphony for Christmas. Our symphony, a promise that we will be coming to you, who, for various reasons cannot be our audience in our place… Reliable to this informal commitment, our Orchestra, under the baguette of Nikos Haliasas and with Dimitris Semsis, our leader violinist, as the soloist, presents a programme characteristic for its work, obviously in the spirit of Christmas, to the symphonic audience of Ioannina.

The Athens State Orchestra is on tour for the first time in Portugal, performing music of the European classical repertoire but also presenting the great Greek composer Nikos Skalkottas. For the fourth concert of this tour, in Lisbon, the Athens State Orchestra conducted by its director, Stefanos Tsialis will present pieces by Carl Maria von Weber, Cesar Franck and Nikos Skalkottas. The rising clarinetist Horacio Ferreira will participate as a soloist.

For the past 36 years, European Music Day has united millions of people through thousands of events in over 700 cities. The Athens State Orchestra, for this year’s celebration, chooses to promote Nikos Skalkottas,, presenting works of the emblematic composer for the Greek but also for the international musical vanguard in the Athens Concert Hall gardens, conducted by the Orchestra’s artistic Director, Stefanos Tsialis.

The Life Aquatic – a tribute to David Bowie

Brazilian songwriter and singer of samba, rock, soul and funk, Seu Jorge, and the Athens State Orchestra, perform a special tribute to David Bowie while recreating the set of The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou on stage. At the Great Lawn Stage, you will have the chance to listen to some of Bowie’s greatest hits in Portuguese, as performed in Wes Anderson’s movie.
