This is followed by Dag Wirén’s elegant and luminous Serenade for Strings, one of the most popular works of Scandinavian music. Alexander Scriabin’s lyrical Andante offers a moment of introspection and poetic sensitivity, before the evening culminates with Benjamin Britten’s Simple Symphony, a work full of vitality and ingenuity, a 20th-century masterpiece inspired by the composer’s youthful melodies. The transition from Fauré to Ewazen is also a transition from “whispered” emotion to extroverted storytelling. The common thread is the use of the horn not as a “military” instrument, but as a third voice that sings, mourns, and celebrates alongside the violin and the piano.
