Certainly, Johann Strauss (son) is one of the main responsible for the immense popularity that the waltz dance acquired in the 19th century and for this he rightfully earned the designation “king of the waltz”; yet even more impressive is the fact that his vast oeuvre remains fascinating to this day, capable of touching the heart of a wide audience around the world, always pleasant, welcomed and, of course, very harmonious with the smile of optimism for the advent of a New Year… It is with such a “smile” that the Athens State Orchestra honours the great Austrian composer and welcomes the New Year with his music, under the baton of the multi-award-winning and rising Georgian conductor, Mirian Khuhunaishvili.

Mozart and the Magic of Christmas

The “Friends of Music Kalamata Association” and the Athens State Orchestra welcome Christmas with a glamorous Gala at the Kalamata Dance Megaron: a night of supreme musical art and festive spirit. Conducted by the acclaimed maestro Nikos Haliasas, the Orchestra presents a programme combining timeless classical repertoire masterpieces with beloved Christmas melodies featuring the rising and particularly talented pianist Chrysanthos Therianos, who performs Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 24 KV 491, one of the great composer’s most emotional pieces. Chrysanthos Therianos excelled in the competition section of the programme “Listening to the Young” 2025 and the Athens State Orchestra chose him among the winner musicians to participate in this concert.
The dramatic Concerto is followed by the glorious Mozart’s Symphony no. 41, the “Jupiter’s Symphony”, a piece full of joy. The event also comprises a part connecting classical music and Christmas tradition: from the melodic Franz Shchubert’s Ave Maria to the traditional Greensleeves, the well-known O Come, All Ye Faithful and two among the most joyful and recognizable Leroy Anderson’s festive pieces.

100 Years from Mikis Theodorakis’s birth

Carnaval is a ballet suite for orchestra that Theodorakis began composing while exiled to the island of Ikaria. According to his own words, this was the occasion for him to acquaint with Greece’s folk music tradition. The album Odyssey is a music journey through Theodorakis’ life, since he composed its first song at the age of 12 and its last at 81. Through this album, Mikis Theodorakis reflects on love, solitude, and the dead-ends of modern man in search of his own Ithaca—like a contemporary Ulisses. Sung by the principal performer of Theodorakis’s works, Maria Farantouri. Conducted by the Artistic Director of the Cultural Center of Heraklion, Myron Michailidis.

The Athens State Orchestra continues its events within the framework of the Greek Ministry of Culture Year Dedicated to Mikis Theodorakis on the 100-year anniversary of his birth, honoring the great Greek composer’s work. At the invitation of the- always hospitable- Prefecture of Crete, two concerts-tribute will be held at our great composer’s hometown, Chania, as well as in Heraklion. In addition, the Athens State Orchestra participates to the celebrations for the 130 years of the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus.

The concert programme includes two of Mikis Theodorakis’s most important works: the Mauthausen song cycle, based on Iakovos Kambanellis’s poetry and the emblematic suite from Zorba the Greek, orchestrated by Dimitris Michas. Mauthausen is an emotional tribute to the Holocaust victims and one of the most harrowing combinations of Greek literature and music of the 20th century. Zorba, a literature figure representing the Greek spirit, freedom and power of life, shall be a counter-weight full of rhythm and passion.

The Athens State Orchestra, always keen on its will and effort to stand by the public of all Greece’s regions, is holding a concert in Veria, presenting works by the three greatest composers of classicism, Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig Van Beethoven. Under the precise and pertinent direction of Maestro Vladimiros Symeonidis, a dynamic interpretation of Beethoven’s olympic Seventh Symphony, four brilliant and promoted Musicians of the Orchestra join their forces as soloists, bringing their own inspired talent at the service of Haydn’s delicate music.
