Beethoven year, concert in Trikala

The Athens State Orchestra travels to Trikala to open the Beethoven Year for the 200th anniversary of the death of the great composer. Two of his top works will be performed, which highlight two different but interrelated aspects of his creative genius. The Piano Concerto no. 3, a work of intense lyricism, drama and virtuosity, is an important milestone in the history of the piano concerto, while the emblematic Symphony no. 5, with its distinctive opening motif, remains a timeless symbol of human strength and victory over adversity. The soloist of the evening is the award-winning pianist of the younger generation Nikolas Pappas, under the musical direction of Eleni Kotsmanidou.

Carmen’s Music, concert in Chania

It the aftermath of the Christmas and New Year’s festivity, the concert that some days earlier is performed in Kalamata, is given in Chania. There can’t be a more beautiful way for an orchestra and its audience to welcome a new year than George Bizet’s Carmen, this ideal mix of French finesse and Spanish passion, timeless melody and orchestral splendor. At the same time, two prominent members of the Athens State Orchestra step away from their regular roles to take center stage as soloists, introducing to the audience two distinct works of their instruments’ repertoire, one very famous (Mendelssohn) and another less known, however equally atmospheric (Weinberg).

The Athens State Orchestra, always aiming to play an active role in the musical life of rural Greece, this year chose to transmit the Christmas message in its own musical way to the capital of Messene by bringing the local audience to contact with timeless masterpieces of the erudite European creation. Young, talented conductor, Maria Bazou reimagines beloved melodies from the famous George Bizet’s opera, Carmen, while the Athens State Orchestra’s Concert Master, Apollon Grammatikopoulos and its leading flutist, Nikos Nikopoulos, take on solo roles in impressive concerts highlighting the full beauty of their instruments’ sound.

Concert at Terneuzen Festival, Netherlands

2026-2027 artistic period starts with the glory corresponding to an opening concert in which the Athens State Orchestra, under the baton of its artistic director, Lukas Karytinos, and in collaboration with two internationally renown, young and repeatedly distinguished soloists, presents important symphonic works of the 19th and the 20th century. What all of such works have in common is that their composers chose to align with their times’ avant-garde: Beethoven consciously changed the tide of music history in every single key; young Saint-Saëns followed Liszt’s and Wagner’s aesthetic ideals, while Shostakovich expressed the 20th century’s outbreaks and tragedies so vividly as few others did.

Certainly, Johann Strauss (son) is one of the main responsible for the immense popularity that the waltz dance acquired in the 19th century and for this he rightfully earned the designation “king of the waltz”; yet even more impressive is the fact that his vast oeuvre remains fascinating to this day, capable of touching the heart of a wide audience around the world, always pleasant, welcomed and, of course, very harmonious with the smile of optimism for the advent of a New Year… It is with such a “smile” that the Athens State Orchestra honours the great Austrian composer and welcomes the New Year with his music, under the baton of the multi-award-winning and rising Georgian conductor, Mirian Khuhunaishvili.

Mozart and the Magic of Christmas

The “Friends of Music Kalamata Association” and the Athens State Orchestra welcome Christmas with a glamorous Gala at the Kalamata Dance Megaron: a night of supreme musical art and festive spirit. Conducted by the acclaimed maestro Nikos Haliasas, the Orchestra presents a programme combining timeless classical repertoire masterpieces with beloved Christmas melodies featuring the rising and particularly talented pianist Chrysanthos Therianos, who performs Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 24 KV 491, one of the great composer’s most emotional pieces. Chrysanthos Therianos excelled in the competition section of the programme “Listening to the Young” 2025 and the Athens State Orchestra chose him among the winner musicians to participate in this concert.
The dramatic Concerto is followed by the glorious Mozart’s Symphony no. 41, the “Jupiter’s Symphony”, a piece full of joy. The event also comprises a part connecting classical music and Christmas tradition: from the melodic Franz Shchubert’s Ave Maria to the traditional Greensleeves, the well-known O Come, All Ye Faithful and two among the most joyful and recognizable Leroy Anderson’s festive pieces.
